Homes planned for Worthing church
The Christ Scientist Church
ANOTHER church looks set to disappear from Worthing’s street scene.
The Second Church of Christ Scientist is seeking outline permission to demolish its unused church at 117 Grand Avenue, and replace it with pitched-roof flats and houses.
An application to the borough council’s planning department says the church was vacated in September, due to a declining congregation and the cost of needed repairs to the building.
The church had considered relocating to its Reading Rooms in Brighton Road, Worthing, but the council said such permanent use would not comply with its planning policy.
“Having considered all alternative options, the church decided to join the Christian Science Society in Chichester, as much of the congregation came from outside the Worthing area, in any event,” said the planning statement.
It adds an alternative user for the Grand Avenue building had not been found.
The application for the 0.38-acre site proposes a terrace of three, three-bedroom houses, and a block of five two-bedroom flats.
There would be 11 parking spaces, cycle parking, and a revised access on to Grand Avenue.
It is planned to retain the Reading Rooms in Brighton Road.
