Kitesurfing in Worthing
Lewis Crathern kitesurfing
THESE photos capture the moments professional kitesurfer Lewis Crathern reached heights of more than 50ft above sea level.
The 26-year-old was kitesurfing near the Aquarena, in Brighton Road, last Tuesday, as winds of more than 40 miles per hour hit the town.
Lewis, of Lansdowne Road, Worthing, said the day was identical to when he gained worldwide fame for kitesurfing over Worthing Pier in November, 2009.
He said: “Once you work out how the wind is going it’s quite nice. Much quicker than 40 miles per hour and it becomes dangerous because the difference in highest and lowest wind speeds is bigger, and it can be difficult to judge the gusts of wind.”
The photos were captured by Lewis’s girlfriend, Lily McBride, who lives nearby.

Lewis will this week leave for Cape Town, in South Africa, for a winter training session there.
He said although it was possible to kitesurf in Worthing all year round, the cold days made it difficult to stay motivated to get out and train.
“There are days like this when it’s really good, but I know it won’t always be like this. It’s going to get colder.”
Lewis has increasingly been visiting schools to discuss kitesurfing and wind energy.
In October, he went to Baltimore to attend the American Offshore Wind Energy Conference, and in 2012 he hopes to build on his commentary experience by joining the world tour as an analyst.
