Lancing benefit cheat claimed nearly £8,000

A WOMAN from Lancing who falsely claimed thousands of pounds in benefits has been given a curfew.

Andrea Short, 63, of Tower Road, Lancing, was sentenced at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Monday, February 8, for falsely claiming 7,967 from Adur District Council.

She had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to two offences under the Social Security Administration Act.

Caroline Perry, prosecuting for the council, said that between September, 2006, and September, 2009, Short had failed to disclose an occupational pension and a second bank account.

Short was sentenced to a 12- month order, including a three -month electronically tagged curfew from 6pm to 6am, and ordered to pay 651 in prosecution costs.

Unpaid work

Stuart Norris, 29, was also sentenced at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Monday, February 8, for falsely claiming 9,725 from Adur District Council.

Norris, who lived in Park Road, Shoreham, at the time, had pleaded guilty to falsely producing a document to claim benefits at an earlier hearing.

The court heard that between July, 2008, and June, 2009, Norris had signed a housing and council tax benefit claim submitted by his wife, but failed to tell her or Adur District Council about three flats he owned in Crewe, Cheshire.

Norris, of Old Shoreham Road, Hove, was sentenced to a 12-month order, including 300 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay prosecution costs of 713.50.
