Lancing man died while in Thai police custody
A TECHNICIAN from Lancing died in police custody in Thailand three days after missing a flight home because he felt too ill to travel, an inquest heard.
Daniel Salmon, who lived at Old Salts Farm Road, Lancing, died on the Thai island of Koh Samui on April 14, 2007.
An inquest at Worthing County Court today (Thursday, May 21) heard that Mr Salmon's health had been deteriorating since a suspected spider bite three weeks earlier.
The jury at his inquest recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.
Confused
Mr Salmon, who had been a technician at Beechams in Worthing, was taken into police custody on April 13, 2007, because a police officer thought he seemed confused and was worried he might hurt himself, according to a report from the Thai police read by coroner's officer Lynda Ralfe.
Thirty-two-year-old Mr Salmon was found unconscious in the male detention room of the Koh Samui District Police Station just after 8am the following day.
An ambulance was called but he died on his way to hospital.
Tribute
Speaking after the inquest Mr Salmon's mother, Maureen, said: "They did nothing in Thailand – there were so many conflicts in their reports.
"The verdict's not so important I really just wanted someone to listen."
Mrs Salmon said she was sure it was the spider bite that had caused her son's death and paid tribute to his memory.
"He was so easy to get on with and had a great sense of humour."
