Langney residents endure 17 hours without power

SOME Langney residents suffered a 17-hour blackout on Sunday evening (November 22).

There was a spate of power cuts across the town over the weekend. Customers at Cineworld at the Crumbles Retail Park were reimbursed for their film tickets before being sent home on Friday evening (November 20) due to a lack of power.

The Herald understands thousands of homes in Pevensey, Sovereign Harbour and Willingdon were affected sometime between Friday evening and Monday morning.

Most had power restored in less than three hours but Orchid Close, Honeysuckle Close and Briar Place were without power for much longer.

Pamela Sanders, of Honeysuckle Close, told the Herald the lights went out at 5.30pm on Sunday and came back on at 10.30am on Monday.

Mrs Sanders says a generator is now supplying power to her and her neighbours' properties.

She said, "Our neighbour is 83 and she didn't want to be alone, so we went and sat with her on Sunday night and helped her to bed before we went home.

"Something like this does show you how much we rely on electricity. All the street lights are out in our road and it is pitch black."

Earlier this week, an EDF spokesperson explained 3,600 households had experienced a power cut on Friday and 4,400 on Sunday evening.

These homes had their power restored in around three hours but it has now emerged that 311 people in the Honeysuckle Close area were without electricity from early evening on Sunday through to the following morning.

The spokesperson said, "We appreciate how difficult it can be to lose power, especially at this time of year, and would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by these incidents."
