Lifeboat called out three times off Bognor Regis

Windy conditions saw a lifeboat crew called out three times in a day to the sea off Bognor Regis.

The sequence of rescues led the duty launching authority at Littlehampton lifeboat station to warn bathers and water enthusiasts not to be fooled by the summer weather.

Geoff Warminger said: "Even on hot sunny days, the wind can still catch people unawares."

The day of drama on June 29 began about 10.20am.

The lifeboat crew returned a windsurfer to the shore after a report the individual was in difficulty west of the pier.

They had been alerted by a 999 call to the coastguard.

Just before 6pm, the Atlantic 75 lifeboat, Blue Peter 1, was launched again to recover three teenagers in trouble south of Bognor beach because of the offshore winds.

Meanwhile, the D-class Spirit of Juniper craft was launched around the same time to search for a possible swimmer in difficulty and also to look for any more inflatable dinghies adrift.

Its crew stood down at 6.45pm without being called into action.
