A COMMUNITY hub in Sompting is fast becoming an integral part of the village, as more and more services become available at the site.
The Sompting Big Local Hub on Cokeham Parade is now hosting computer classes run by Adur Online Learners, and on March 26, it will be supporting Epilepsy Action by holding a purple fun day.
The will be two fun sessions, one for pre-schoolers between 1pm and 3pm, and another for older children between 4pm and 6pm organised by a professional art teacher.
“Please wear old clothes as you will get purple,” said chairman Trevor Crowter.
During the Adur Festival it will transformed into a strange creature pop up pet shop where the community can come in, make a strange creature and leave it on display for the whole two weeks.
Mella Faye Punchard, from the Adur Festival organising committee, said: “We are very much looking to work with the Sompting Big Local, not only for this year but for the next few years in bringing the Adur Festival into the heart of Sompting.”
The partnership will soon be able to start spending its £1million Big Lottery grant.
But first it must come up with a profile of the village, with facts about the area and what residents think of it, and a ‘vision statement’, based on what the community would like to see changed, improved or added to the village.
Worthing Credit Union is now working with the partnership to offer its services to the community, and the hub has application forms for savers and borrowers.
Once signed up, users will be able to access their accounts from the hub’s computer if they have no internet at home.
Renovations in the hub are progressing, and after a kitchen refit it will start to move toward providing the café facilities some residents want to see.
The front space of the hub has now been refurbished with seating, tables and a sofa.
Other services available include a PCSO street surgery, local councillors surgeries, a jigsaw library and book exchange, and access to the food bank.
“It can get quite busy sometimes,” said co-chairman Trevor Crowter.
The hub is open from 9am to 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and other times when it is manned by community volunteers.
