MP backs Lancing fire station campaign

MP Tim Loughton has backed the campaign to save Lancing retained fire station's second engine.

Firefighters at the station, in Elm Grove, say the changes, part of a proposal by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, could put people living in Lancing and Sompting at risk.

"Lancing has a very efficient fire service," said Mr Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham.

"The statistics produced by the council's consultants do not properly reflect just how busy this station is and how important it is in backing up the larger services at Shoreham and Worthing."

Mr Loughton has urged people to attend meetings and write letters of protest.

Robert Byrne, spokesman for the Retained Firefighters Union at Lancing, urged people to attend a parish council meeting at Lancing Parish Hall, in South Street, Lancing, at 7.30pm on Wednesday, September 1, and have their say on the plans.

"We need to send a very important message to West Sussex Fire and Rescue service that these cuts are unacceptable," he said.

Mr Byrne also urged people to write to Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council (email: louise.goldsmith@westsussex.gov.uk), and sign petitions at various locations in Lancing and Sompting.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is currently carrying out a consultation on the plans, which can be viewed at www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire or local libraries.

County fire officer Max Hood said the changes would free up resources and allow firefighters to "concentrate on the areas of greatest risk".
