New homes approved for Worthing

ROAD safety concerns were not enough to prevent a nine-home development off Warren Road, Worthing, from being approved .

The borough council's development control committee gave conditional approval to demolish a chalet bungalow, 142 Warren Road, and replace it with eight houses and an apartment.

Objectors said the proposal was being opposed purely on road safety grounds.

They did not think access to this development should come out onto the A27, especially so near the pedestrian crossing.

Traffic concerns

A Highways Agency report to the committee said that in this case, three existing accesses onto the A27 were proposed to be combined into one.

"Bearing this in mind, the Highways Agency's view is that the number of additional traffic movements arising from the increase in housing units on the site would not be material in highway capacity terms...

"If the access is provided as proposed, and is operational before construction commences, we consider that road safety will not be harmed and may, indeed, be improved as a result of the proposed development.

"Also, we do not believe the proposed development will be materially harmful to traffic flow."

Readers' poll

After the Herald's story last week, we asked what people thought of the plans on our website.

We asked: do you think the proposed development off Warren Road would cause safety risks?

Nearly 1,500 people voted, with 97 per cent saying "no" and just three per cent saying "yes".
