New look for Worthing's Steyne

THE go-ahead has been given to fill a 200-year-old gap in a terrace overlooking Steyne Gardens, Worthing.

Borough planners last Tuesday approved an application to "bridge" the 25-yard gap in The Steyne, in a style sympathetic with the other two sections of the early-19th-century faade.

The original developer started to build a terrace of town houses, starting from both the north and south ends, but he went bankrupt before he could complete the project - and the gap, currently used as a garden for number 7, has been there ever since.

The borough council's development control committee approved plans for an in-fill block of eight three-bedroom apartments, plus the conversion of 7 The Steyne to provide three two-bedroom flats and one two-bedroom maisonette.

A planning report to the committee said the development would make effective and efficient use of an existing brownfield site, offering a mix of dwellings, and would be in line with the local development framework.

The Worthing Society welcomed the development, describing it as a "sensitive and responsible" approach to filling the space.
