New plans for Worthing Hospital
WIDE-ranging develop-ment plans for Worthing Hospital include a new 40-bed ward, new outpatients accommodation and a new breast clinic with dedicated car parking.
The Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust has submitted the proposals to Worthing Borough Council.
If approved, much of the work is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2011.
It is planned to relocate the existing outpatients department into a new block in the south-east of the hospital site, adjacent to the main entrance and facing the Children's Centre.
This new location will improve facilities for outpatients, and release space within the hospital crucial for the upgrading and expansion of the acute medical and assessment unit.
Update buildings
A planning statement says there is a need to update some of the hospital buildings to meet the needs of the local population.
Ten wards in the West Wing block would be refurbished to bring all the electrical and mechanical services up-to-date, and increase the number of single rooms to help control infection.
Relocation of the outpatients department would create space for a new single admissions area in the heart of the hospital, adjacent to A&E, imaging and other diagnostic services.
The new 40-bed ward is planned for the first floor above the new outpatients department, with plant and office accommodation within the roof space.
Breast clinic
The other main development proposed, a new breast clinic in Park Avenue, would use the most up-to-date equipment.
Sixteen houses used for staff accommodation would be demolished to make way for the new facility, which would enable breast screening to be offered to a wider age range of women.
The Department of Health has recently extended the age range for screening women for breast cancer, and this will mean a 36 per cent increase in the number of patients treated.
The hospital's current breast clinic is too small to cope with the increased workload.
