Numbers grow at Walberton flower show
Some 230 entries ensured Walberton Horticultural Society's latest summer show was a success.
Each section contained some excellent exhibits. These included roses, an outstanding zinnia commented on by the judge, an enormous carrot, a large number of appetising-looking preserves, the usual much-admired exhibits of floral art and a number of very interesting entries in the handicraft and art section.
Organisers gained the added satisfaction of seeing a number of new exhibitors in what is hoped to be a good sign for the future. Only the number, though not the quality, of the children's section was a disappointment.
A dull and drizzly morning gave way to the sun just as the show opened to the public in the afternoon to encourage a steady flow of visitors. Many of them stayed for the customary tea or coffee and cake.
At the end of the afternoon, society president David Donovan presented the cups and trophies to the winners after he had recommended local shows taking place shortly and the visit to Wisley by the society in September.
Society chairman Joan Jackson, closed the show by thanking all those who had worked to make the event a success, in particular on this occasion, due to the booking of the hall for a wedding reception on the Friday evening, those who had come in at near midnight to set up tables and again at 6am to set out cards and vases.
