Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell supports new mums

NEW mums who want to breast-feed can now get advice and support from 12 experts – other mums.

After 12 weeks on a training course, a dozen mums have graduated as breast-feeding peer supporters and will now help new mums attending drop-in groups in Shoreham, Lancing and Worthing.

The new peer supporters will also offer information and encouragement through a breast-feeding helpline and visit new mothers on the post-natal ward at Worthing Hospital.

To mark the mums' success in completing the course run by West Sussex Primary Care Trust (PCT), a graduation ceremony was held at the Boundstone children and family centre, Lancing.

Sally Gunnell

Olympic gold medallist – and Steyning mum – Sally Gunnell was special guest at the graduation and presented the new peer supporters with their final certificates.

Diana Bell, breast-feeding project co-ordinator for the PCT, said: "Peer supporters do make a big difference.

"Often, mums who are feeling unsure or unconfident about breast-feeding would rather talk to someone who has been through that experience, rather than a health professional, and that is what these women can offer."

The 12 peer supporters will help local breastfeeding mothers through the Milk! breast-feeding drop-in sessions at children and family centres.

Sessions

The sessions are at the Kingston Buci centre, Middle Road, Shoreham, on Fridays, from 10am until noon; at the Maybridge centre, The Strand, Worthing, on Tuesdays, between 1.30pm and 3pm; at the Wave centre, Dominion Road, Worthing, on Wednesdays, from 10am until 11.30am, and at the Lancing centre, North Road, Lancing, on Thursdays, from 10am until noon.

For more information, call the breast-feeding peer support team on 01903 843329 or the Milk! breastfeeding helpline on 07770 704485.
