Paraglide to raise money for We Play Too!

A DISABLED woman from Lancing is planning a sponsored paraglide to raise money for the We Play Too! campaign.

Kate Bucknall, of Fetherston Road, Lancing, has had heart surgery, brain surgery, has lost most of her eyesight and has suffered kidney failure which led to her having a leg amputated.

She heard about the We Play Too! campaign to build disabled play equipment at Brooklands, in Brighton Road, when she was in hospital last summer.

Amputation

"I was in hospital having my leg amputated when it was in the news," she said.

"When I got out of hospital I decided to get involved in the fund-raising," said the 33-year-old

"It could have been a sponsored husband pushing me in the wheelchair but I thought this was quite different."

Doctors believe Mrs Bucknall medical problems are due to a weak immune system.

Dialysis

"I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was five, then I had heart surgery, then I had brain surgery then I had a really rare face bug which caused the blindness," she said.

"Then I had kidney failure – that's what caused me to lose my leg."

Despite undergoing dialysis three times a week at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Mrs Bucknall is determined not to let her health problems stop her living her life.

"I don't want to be just an ill person," said the former psychologist, who is hoping to raise 1,000.

Brooklands

We Play Too! was launched by Lyn Aaron-Ferrigno, of Mash Barn Lane, Lancing, who wanted to build a wheelchair-friendly play area at Brooklands.

Mrs Aaron-Ferrigno's daughter, Zoe, has dystonic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
