Pensioner sentenced for death by careless driving
A PENSIONER who ran over and killed a drunk man who was lying in the road late at night broke down in court this week.
Valerie Hill, 72, of Park Crescent, Worthing, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving when she appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The court heard how Hill, a manager of a care home, was driving east along Wykeham Road at 1.50am on Saturday, June 18, when she drove over what she thought was a black rubbish bag in the middle of the road.
Hill was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.
She was ordered to pay £85 costs. Hill was told she would not need to retake her driving test but may find it hard to get car insurance.
