VOLUNTEERS have helped give a Sompting church a spring clean as part of a company's initiative to get its staff involved with the community.

Staff from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Kelly's Services spent the day scrubbing, mopping, weeding and painting St Mary's Church, in Church Lane, Sompting, as part of the GSK Orange Day.

The Rev Erika Howard said: "It was absolutely brilliant.

"They have done a fantastic job.

"It was wonderful, because we had a wedding today (Saturday, May 23) and the place was beautiful for the bride.

"We are very, very grateful for what they have done.

"I've also got to say a big thank-you to the people from Sompting parish who helped with the refreshments. It was a real team effort."

Frances Howard, of GSK, said: "Erika Howard has been the GSK industrial chaplain for two years and visits the Worthing site regularly to provide support to employees at their time of need.

"This is in addition to being responsible for two churches, St Mary's and St Peter's, within her Sompting parish.

"Our Orange Day is a great opportunity to give something back to Erika and her church."

The local branch of GSK is in Southdownview Road, Worthing, and the Orange Day is a new initiative set up by the company's chief executive officer, Andrew Witty.
