Police hunt crash driver
A MOTORIST who failed to stop after a car seriously injured an elderly pedestrian in the Old Town area of Eastbourne on Wednesday morning is being sought by police.
The accident happened in Moat Croft Road, close to its junction with the A2270 Upperton Road, just after 11.30am.
The victim, a man aged 89, suffered a broken hip but was quickly attended by an ambulance crew that was first the scene.
He was rushed to Eastbourne District General Hospital, where he has been detained for treatment.
Yesterday morning (Thursday) his condition was "stable".
It is believed the man, who lived locally but who has not yet been named, may have been returning home after shopping at a nearby Waitrose supermarket.
The car involved was a large, dark vehicle – possibly a 4x4 – and quite dirty. It is thought a man and a woman were inside.
Inspector Steve Grace, of the Road Policing Unit, Polegate, said it appeared the vehicle may have rolled back while waiting to turn out of the steep junction onto Upperton Road, knocking the man over.
Insp Grace said, "The driver didn't stop and it's possible that they didn't know the man had been crossing the road behind them.
"I would like to appeal to the driver of the vehicle to get in touch with us, and we'd also like to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened."
Police can be contacted about the accident by calling 0845 607 0999 and quoting serial number 581 for Wednesday, November 4.
