Sad animal tales from Findon sanctury Paws

A GIANT bunny called Barney, a cat rescued from a burning sofa and four kittens left to die on a riverbank are just some of the residents at a Findon Village animal sanctuary.

Paws, situated in The Oval, is currently home to more than 100 animals —and be it the hens, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, kittens, cats, miniature horses, donkey, birds and even the parrot, most are in need of loving new homes.

Stacey McSpirit is the woman behind Paws, a registered charity, and she has dedicated most of her life to caring for unwanted, mistreated, or stray animals at her sanctuary, which she runs from her home.

She is also supported by her neighbour and friend, Sheila Steere.

Animal haven

"I have been doing this for the last 30 years, but it really runs a lot deeper than that," said Stacey.

"My father rescued animals, so I have really been involved most of my life.

"I have everything I need in the world here. People always ask why I never go on holiday, but I am so happy."

Stacey's garden is a haven for all her animals.

Getting along

Dogs Knasher and Rainbow, along with Spice the cat, are always on hand to eagerly greet any visitors.

They get on very happily with the other animals, including the hens and cockerill, a blind cat called Harley, and a parrot.

At the bottom of Stacey's garden, three miniature horses and a donkey can be found.

Jasper the donkey, who is five years old, was rescued from a donkey market.

Toy horse

Toyhorse Princess Snowdrop is in the Guinness Book of World records as being the smallest horse born.

And then there is eight-year-old Rivoli, who was rescued using money raised by the regulars at the Rivoli pub, which once stood in Chapel Road.

They are also joined by Twinkle.

The horses and donkey have become a familiar sight in Findon Village, often being taken out for walks.

Sheila's back garden boasts an avery for all the unwanted birds.

To support Paws with donations, or re-home an animal, telephone 01903 872734.

Paws is open from 3pm to 5pm every Sunday and there is an on-site gift shop and plant and egg sale.
