Saucy postcards tackle Worthing and Adur litterbugs

IN the latest bid to encourage people not to drop their litter, Adur and Worthing councils will be displaying saucy, national campaign posters and handing out fines to persistent litterbugs.

National anti-litter charity Keep Britain Tidy has been asking councils across the country to put up posters designed to catch attention with their cheeky postcard-style slogans – "Bend Over and Think of England" and "Get Behind Us".

Adur district and Worthing borough councils said they were getting behind the campaign both to help clean up streets and divert scarce resources to more deserving services.

The two councils spend 650,000 each year – 1,780 per day – picking up after people, money which could fund other services.

Discarded cigarette ends and fast-food wrappers form the bulk of the rubbish the councils pick up.

Worthing cabinet member for clean and green, Clive Roberts, said: "Anyone seen dropping litter, particularly cigarette butts and sandwich wrappers, will be given a football-style yellow card by one of our litter guys.

"Although they won't actually have to pay on that occasion, it serves as a warning.

"If they are caught next time, they will get a fine of 75."

Adur cabinet member for clean and green, Keith Dollemore, said: "In this dire financial climate, we just can't be wasting our resources on picking up litter and the like from thoughtless litterbugs.

"As the poster for this campaign states, we are backing Keep Britain Tidy's rallying call to get behind us and pick up litter and bin it."
