SAVE OUR POST OFFICES: North Lancing marches on
WET weather failed to dampen the spirits of 80 campaigners who marched through Lancing to protest against the proposed post office cuts.
Joined by East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton and councillors, they marched from the threatened North Lancing branch, in Mill Road, to Lancing's main post office, in North Road.
The route saw the group – which included many elderly residents – cross the notoriously dangerous A27 near the Manor roundabout.
If cuts proposed by the Post Office are given the go-ahead, north Lancing residents would face the journey every time they needed to visit a branch.
Upon reaching the North Road branch, the protesters patiently queued to buy postal goods, including penny stamps.
Mr Loughton said: "This was a fantastic turnout from north Lancing residents, who came out despite appalling weather conditions to show how passionate they are about their post office in Mill Road.
"So much for the 0.9 mile limit which the Post Office say they have put on the alternative post office destinations if these closures go ahead.
"For many people who live north of the Mill Road post office or in parts of north Sompting, a round trip could be as long as four miles, especially if residents opt to take safe routes across the A27."
Mr Loughton said the march provided further evidence that the main Lancing post office was already under enormous pressure and would be unable to cope if closures went ahead.
He said: "The campaign by north Lancing residents to save their post office is well-organised and it is time for the Post Office to start listening to their very real concerns."
