Shock at Worthing car park 130 per cent price rise

DRIVERS have reacted with dismay at news prices at previously low-cost town centre car park are to rise by up to 130 per cent.

From January 25, the daily rate at the NCP Teville Gate car park will rise from 2 to 3 and the 6.50 weekly ticket is being withdrawn.

That means anyone who previously bought the weekly ticket will now have to pay 15 to park during the week – 8.50 more.

Season ticket prices for monthly, quarterly and annual tickets are being reviewed.

Ticket review

But if nothing is announced before the daily price increase comes into force, it will cost 12 to park in Teville Gate for a month – 3 less than it will to stay for just a week.

Motorists criticised the price increase as unjustifiable.

Paul Waller, 34, from Shoreham, said: "I have just signed up to pay monthly, which is not a bad cost as it stands at 12 per month.

"However, I can see that price increasing and, to be honest, for the state of the car park as it is, I don't believe the increase is justifiable."

Disappointment

Others said drug needles and other paraphernalia often littered the stairwells.

Sharon Clarke, Worthing's town centre manager, said the increase was "disappointing" and would hurt low-paid workers and employers.

An NCP spokeswoman said the new daily rate was "still well below market standards" and that planned improvements include a manned office and better lighting.
