Sompting Festival beckons this weekend

A WEEKEND of family fun, music and entertainment begins on Friday, June 5, thanks to the annual Sompting Festival.

The fourth festival starts at 3pm with the opening of a community caf and, from 6pm, there will be a fairground, beer festival and live music from Marie Dance, Slimshack, The Legacy, and Sandy Beech and The Deckchairs on Sompting Recreation Ground.

John Roberts will be making a special guest appearance later in the evening.

On Saturday, June 6, the fairground and beer festival open again at 10am, along with a village fair.

Belly dancers

Entertainment will be provided by Sompting Village Primary School's energy dance and drumming, the Sahari Zari Belly Dancers, Lancing Freestyle Karate and KC Streetdance.

There will also be music from Culpepper, Falsetto Teeth and Ian Digweed.

At Sompting Community Centre, there will be the Somptin' Old Exhibition, craft demonstrations and refreshments available.

Members of the Sussex Folk Orchestra will be playing traditional music, and a group of singers will be doing a traditional folk sing-around of old Sussex country songs.

It will also be possible to take a look round the old air-raid shelter – believed to be the last of its type in Sussex.

Open day

The village hall will also be holding its own open day and refreshments will be available.

In the evening, there will be music from Covered in the marquee, along with a battle of the bands.

Activities on Sunday, June 7, start at 10.30am with an informal time of praise hosted by Sompting Community Church in the marquee.

At noon, the fairground, village fair and beer festival will open again and there will be more entertainment from Lancing Freestyle Karate, Sompting Village Morris and Neferiti Arabic Dance.

There will be music from Beth Thomas and the Messengers Gospel Choir, and the festival closes with a rock and roll set from the excellent Just by Chance.

Radio

The Somptin' Old Exhibition at the community centre and the village hall will also both be open on Sunday.

Seaside Hospital Radio will be running the public address throughout the weekend.
