Steyning road closure causes traffic chaos
A MAJOR road was closed during the rush hour this morning (Friday, September 28) after mud and slurry was scattered across it.
The A283 Steyning bypass was shut between the Bramber and High Trees roundabouts at around 10pm on Thursday night.
A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said engineers from EDF Energy had been working along the side of the road when it is believed they accidentally hit a borehole, sending mud shooting across the road.
The road was closed for a 900-metre stretch while the area was cleared and diversions were put in place.
The closure led to long tailbacks during Friday's rush-hour as drivers found alternative routes through the villages of Small Dole and Bramber.
The road re-opened in the afternoon.
