Street light project lacks ‘common sense’

POORLY-positioned lamp posts and ‘unbelievable mess’ – just the latest complaints of residents fed up with street light contractors SSE.

The firm has been busy replacing aged street lights across the county after securing a 25-year maintenance deal with West Sussex County Council in 2010.

But several residents have approached The Herald in recent months voicing concerns, including two in the past week.

Ian Garrard 53, of Grenville Avenue, Worthing, complained after a new street light was installed in close proximity to his bedroom window.

He said: “I complained and was told there was nothing they could do. I was fuming, as it was ridiculous.

“When I told them I had contacted The Herald, I had an engineer visit and he agreed to move it.”

He added: “The light had not gone live yet but it was right outside the bedroom window.

“Common sense says don’t put it outside someone’s bedroom window.”
