Tarring play gear out of action

SPACE WALKER equipment at Tarring Recreation Ground is again out of action, following another fault developing in a key component.

The equipment, part of a new 73,000 multi-use games area, was first found to be faulty soon after the area was unveiled in August.

At first, vandals were blamed for the equipment's condition.

But then it emerged that the Space Walker may have been defective from the start.

Mum-of-four Sharon Featherstone, of St Elmo Road, discovered the most recent fault.

"I think it is a bit of a shame that kids get all the blame for things that they have not done," she said.

"I know there are some hooligans in the area, but they don't represent all the youngsters."

Council spokesman Peter Kerrigan said the cracked part had been removed from the Space Walker and returned to manufacturers.

"It's the second time this has failed, and we want to know why and how it happened," he said.

"Although it is not 'broken', we removed it for the absolute safety of its users, and it will be replaced as soon as possible.

"In the meantime, there are four other equipment items which are fully functional."
