Thanks to 'silent heroes' of Bognor Regis who give so selflessly

A trio of Bognor Regis area blood donors have been recognised for helping to save some 600 lives.

Paulette Plant of Downview Road, Felpham, Maureen Tucker, of Havelock Road, and Robert Lewis of Hawthorn Road, Bognor Regis, received a crystal plate for achieving 75 blood donations each.

The presentations took place at an awards ceremony held by the National Blood Service in London.

The awards dinner is a way of recognising the commitment long-serving blood donors give to saving the lives of others. Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people.

Zeeshan Asghar, for the NBS, said: "Only three per cent of donors reach their 75th donation, while less than one per cent make it to 100 donations.

"We are proud to reward these incredible people – these silent heroes – who have rolled up their sleeves so many times over the years to help save lives. We really hope more people will follow their example."

Guest speaker Julie Henderson presented the awards to the honoured donors. She underwent an emergency caesarean in 2006 that led to a loss of blood so vast, she needed transfusions over several days to replace the blood she lost.

Julie gave a speech on how blood donors saved her life and allowed her to be a mum.
