UPDATED: A grand dinner – photographs from the Worthing Herald's archives

A LARGE number of people are gathered for what looks like a gala dinner.

Daffodils on the table suggest the event took place during Spring.

This photograph was published in the Worthing Herald today (Thursday, September 25), and prompted reader Alan Grove to come in for a closer look.

Mr Grove, 87, thought the couple sitting on the end of the table in the foreground looked very much like him and his wife Pat.

However, a second call to the Herald has revealed the couple in question are not the Groves but Jean and Ray Willis.

Mrs Willis recognised the event immediately as the 21st birthday party of former Worthing mayor Brian Lynn.

The event took place in April 1958 at the Richmond Rooms in Worthing.

Mrs Willis, was sitting opposite her husband and next to her father, Gordon Smith.

Her mother Elsie Smith was turning towards the camera and her face is blurred.

Mrs Willis is a former Sandhurst School pupil, who lived in Worthing throughout the Second World War.

She was 26-years-old when the photograph was taken.
