TWO members of the public helped to rescue a canoeist who had got into difficulty off Worthing this afternoon.

Ambulance crews treated the man at the water’s edge after he got into difficulties near Grand Avenue, then carried him up to the promenade.

Solent Coastguard said two members of the public had helped to rescue the man after hearing his cries for help.

“He got himself capsized and was unable to right the canoe,” said a coastguard spokesman.

“He was struggling to get it back the right way up and was shouting for help. He kept going under water and had taken in large quantities of water and become exhausted.

“Two people went into the water to assist. They were waist-deep in the water and helped to drag the canoe back to the beach.”

Earlier on, Sussex Police told the Worthing Herald the man had managed to get himself back into the canoe.

“He had become tired while out paddling in his canoe,” said the police spokesman.

The canoeist was taken to Worthing Hospital for a check-up but it was not believed he was seriously affected by the incident.
