THE ENVIRONMENT Agency is working with Southern Water after a “technical issue” occurred at its water waste and treatment works in East Worthing, resulting in a discharge of untreated sewage to the coastal area.
Agency officers were out early yesterday morning (Sunday, September 2) to help reduce the risk of further pollution.
Worthing Borough Council was informed of the incident.
Gareth Bates of the Environment Agency said: “We will remain onsite to ensure that all action is taken to prevent further risk to the beach and costal area and we will oversee the clean-up operation. A full investigation into the incident is currently underway as well as all our efforts being focussed on reducing the risk of pollution to the coastal area.
Members of the public can report pollution incidents by calling the Environment Agency’s emergency hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
