TONNES of hay in a farmer’s field which caught alight in Findon early this morning may have been there to keep travellers out, firefighters believe.
The fire service received a number of calls to attend Nepcote Lane at 6.40am, where they found several tonnes of hay ablaze.
The fire may have been started deliberately.
Fire chief Roy Barraclough said: “Originally it was seven or eight tonnes of hay that had been put there, I think, to keep travellers out.
“We don’t know for sure how it started but there were a few bottles around the scene, so it could have been started deliberately.
“Equally, it could have been accidental, for example if someone dropped a cigarette.”
One hose reel and drag rakes were used to extinguish the fire.
