VIDEO: Teachers' strike rally in Worthing

HUNDREDS of teachers from across Sussex have gathered in Worthing to rally support for their strike action.

"Fair pay for teachers" was their unanimous call.

Armed with banners, balloons and their best chanting voices, the teacher congregated on the steps of the Pavilion, receiving "toots" of support from passing drivers, before heading inside for a meeting with officials from the National Union of Teachers (NUT).

The strike, which affected teachers and school across the country, forced 10 schools in Worthing, five in Shoreham, one on Lancing and one on Sompting to either close, or just cancel some classes.

According to Dave Thomas, secretary of the West Sussex NUT, teachers are concerned about below inflation pay rises — and recruitment is becoming a real problem.

He said: "We fell positive that we will have an affect with our rally and influence the government.

"The starting salary for a teacher is just over 20,000 and that is 3,000 below the average graduate starting salary.

"We are finding young teachers are really struggling."
