VOTE: Campaigner 'encouraged' in bid to stop Worthing sex shop licence
A MORALS campaigner has renewed his fight against plans for a town centre sex shop to be licensed.
Last week, the Worthing Herald reported that Kathy Sutton, the owner of Secret Desires in Rowlands Road, had applied for a third time to get a licence for the shop, allowing it to stock 18-rated adult movies.
The move has angered Steve Stevens, who has been campaigning against the shop since it opened in 2005.
This week, he took to Rowlands Road with a petition against the plans, collecting more than 300 signatures in just a few hours' petitioning.
Mr Stevens, 88, of Rowlands Road, said: "We will carry on fighting and I am determined we will not have a licensed sex shop in the town. The response I have had to my petition is amazing.
"The number of signatures I collected on the first day equalled one per minute.
"This has encouraged me to carry on. The aim is to get the shop's owner to withdraw her licence application. If I need to, I will bring in a lawyer."
Mr Stevens has been collecting signatures with help from fellow campaigner Louise Harding.
He will also be out in Montague Street, by the bandstand, from 10.30am to 3pm this Saturday, and he has written to all the churches in Worthing asking for their support.
