VOTE: Artists' studios in Worthing beach chalets plan approved

DESPITE objections, Worthing planners have approved an application for the change of use of five, brick beach chalets into artists' studios/workshops.

The units are just east of Splash Point, and the operating times will be between 9am and 9pm on any day.

A council report to the committee said: "The proposed use is entirely consistent with the council's Seafront Strategy and Masterplan, and will be a significant move towards the implementation of the Active Beach Zone.

"It is a low-key use which will enhance this section of the seafront and complement other projects, such as Splash Point Regeneration."

Protesters against the proposal said it was not clear that culture-led regeneration uses would benefit Worthing and the beach-front economy.

There was a great demand for these chalets, so why were they being disposed of?

These beach chalets would become small business units, incorporating ancillary sales, and the "shoddy condition" of the chalets was "down to the council".

The planning go-ahead stipulated a temporary permission for two years.

A council spokeswoman told the Herald there was a waiting list of between two and three years for both the brick chalets and the wooden variety.

Annual rents for the brick chalets were 950, and 832.50 for the wooden ones.
