VOTE: Worthing's pothole problems are deepening
DESPITE more than £2million being spent on repairing West Sussex potholes, more and more motorists are reporting wheel and underbody damage to their vehicles.
One of the latest victims is 25-year-old Jason Rix, of Durrington, who is having to replace three alloy wheels on his 1996 BMW 318tdi.
"It is going to cost me between 450-500 to get my wheels replaced," said Jason.
"I am going to send the bill to the county council or Highways Agency.
"There is a particularly bad pothole in Littlehampton Road opposite the Tesco Express."
More money
West Sussex County Council is to boost its spending on pothole repairs by 228,000.
The move follows a review of the money the county council will receive from council tax during 2010/2011.
Potholes can be reported to the county council at its website www.westsussex.gov.uk.
The additional money will come from the Mid Sussex area, and is mainly due to an increase in the taxbase – households that will be paying council tax.
Council Leader Henry Smith said: "I am pleased the council agreed with me that this money should be used to accelerate the programme of pothole repairs in the new financial year."
Constant repairs
The county council has already pumped 2.35 million into tackling potholes caused by the recent severe weather conditions.
There are currently 30 teams repairing approximately 500 holes per day.
Today (Thursday, February 25) pothole repairs will take place in Worthing town centre.
Potholes in Richmond Road, from its junction with Crescent Road to its junction with Chapel Road, will be filled with asphalt and new road markings will be laid.
Richmond Road will be closed between Heene Road and Chapel Road during the course of the work, between 7pm and 7am. Access to properties will be maintained.
