WEBCAM: New life hatches at Broadwater school

FLUFFY chicks being cared for by schoolchildren in Broadwater have become a huge hit with thousands of web users.

The youngest children at Broadwater First and Middle School, Rectory Gardens, have been looking after eggs and watching them hatch for the last few weeks — something the school enjoys doing every year.

But this year is the first time the whole event has been captured on webcam.

And according to Jez Wong, the deputy head teacher, webcam users have, in just two weeks, clocked up more than 21,000 minutes of viewing the eggs and them hatching.

Amazing experience

There are now six chicks and three ducks.

Mr Wong said: "The whole thing has been amazing.

"We decided to set up the webcam this year as we often miss out on seeing the eggs hatch as it happens when we are not in school.

"It helps the children learn more about the process of life, but there is also the wow factor of seeing the chicks hatch."

The chicks will be in the school until Friday, April 3, when they will be returned to their mothers at a nearby farm.
