Were fugitive geese fleeing the festive table?

ANIMAL rescuers went on wild goose chases over Christmas - after two birds were spotted on the run in Hailsham.

The first feathered fugitive was picked up on South Road at 12.30pm on Christmas Day - a last minute dash from someone's dinner table, perhaps?

It was saved from a roasting by volunteers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) who were called out by police who had received reports of a stray 'goose'.

The charity's veterinary ambulance was summoned to the scene while rescuers Trevor Weeks and Kathy Martyn checked gardens in the area.

The hunt came to an end when a motorist spotted the bird - which was in fact a Muscovy duck - wandering up the road and alerted the rescuers.

It was taken to the Kit Wilson Trust at Hadlow Down, near Uckfield, which agreed to home the duck.

But on Saturday, a second duck was found on the same stretch of road, mystifying WRAS's founder Trevor Weeks.

He said the Muscovy ducks were not believed to be wild and were possibly escaped pets.

He added, "It definitely wasn't the same one so they might well be siblings. To see them wandering around like that is very unusual.

"They're not the best of flyers so they probably come from around that southern area of Hailsham town centre."

Anyone missing two ducks - or who knows where the escapees may have come from - should ring the Kit Wilson Trust on 01825 830444.
