West Worthing playground backed by former mayor
MARINE ward councillor Major Tom Wye is backing a suggestion to site Worthing's new £100,000 playground on the beach, east of the water garden at West Worthing.
The idea comes from Gavin Baylis, of Anscombe Road, at a time when borough council officers are considering a short list of sites for the BIG Lottery-funded playground.
Mr Baylis thinks the short-listed sites – the Marine Gardens putting green and the open space between Bernard Road and Anscombe Road – are not suitable for the playground.
The facility was originally proposed for Goring Greensward, but the council decided against this proposal.
Alternative
Mr Baylis said although he was not in favour of a playground, his site was a much better alternative to the other two options.
"The council want this thing to go ahead so if they want it this does seem to make sense," he said.
"Why not extend the water garden idea, with its boulders, wooden walk way and other elements, with an eco-friendly playground, integrating the synergies of design of the water garden?"
Maj Wye said this was a better site than the two short-listed ones, and he would be asking council officers to look at the idea.
Seeking opinion
"I know there is a lot of support for it.
"I am utterly convinced that this site should be it," he said.
Mr Baylis has said traditional playground equipment would not be suitable for such an exposed position on the beach and alternative play equipment is needed.
He is asking people to comment on the suggestion by visiting www.worthingplayground.co.uk and completing a survey.
