‘Worst pub in Worthing’ could be redeveloped
The Clifton Arms
PLANS to redevelop “one of the worst pubs in Worthing” have been submitted to Worthing Borough Council.
The now-closed Clifton Arms, at the northern end of Clifton road, has been boarded up for several months – and it is proposed to convert the property into shops and flats.
A planning statement going before borough planners says: “The existing public house had one of the worst (if not the worst) reputations in Worthing.
“And even though there were five different managers in the last nine months of trading, none was able to turn the pub into a profit-making establishment.”
The statement continues that the loss of this pub “is unlikely to be seen as a loss to local residents, for the reasons above. There are two other public houses a short distance away.” The most recent review in a Worthing pubs guide said: “Inhabited by some very strange customers.
“Tourists, not recommended unless you’re accompanied by fully trained experts for future counselling sessions!”
Planning permission is being sought by I. Kenangil to convert the pub, with allied extensions, into two ground-floor shops and six self-contained flats.
The existing garage will be demolished, and no car-parking spaces are planned for the building’s new role.
