Former bus driver Bernard Jefford welcomed Norah Fisher, Worthing’s deputy mayor consort, and her canine Labradoodle assistant Herbie to Chapman Court, Littlehampton Road, Worthing, for the launch of his new book, Once a Busman...

They had travelled from the Town Hall on a special bus, with the destination screen “Once a Busman...” for the journey.

Bernard said: “They really, really enjoyed themselves.”

Gathered guests, court tenants and senior management of Housing 21 welcomed them on arrival.

Norah was presented with a copy of the book by Bernard and a plant by his wife, Pat, before cutting a cake, made in the shape of a book. “

Some 35 people attended the book launch and many books were signed and sold,” added Bernard. “I met up with several former colleagues and also several retired, some of whom had worked for Southdown many years previously.”

He thanked Stagecoach and operations manager Steve Venables, who helped organise the bus transport and the special destination screen.

Bernard’s book tells of his long career as a bus driver and his many adventures in Worthing and beyond. It is priced £12, to include P&P.

To order, send a cheque to Bernard Jefford, 19 Chapman Court, Littlehampton Road, Worthing BN13 1RF.
