A WORTHING councillor has been charged with indecently assaulting a boy under the age of 14.

Mark McCarthy, 36, of Offington Drive, has been charged with two counts of indecent assault on a boy aged under 14 between February 27, 2002, and December 31, 2002.

He pleaded not guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court on December 18 last year and magistrates decided the case should be dealt with at Reading Crown Court.

The independent Tory will next appear at the magistrates' court on February 12, when his case will be committed to the crown court.

We asked Mr McCarthy, a stockbroker, to comment on the allegations. He said: "For legal reasons, I am unable to comment on these malicious allegations because of on-going legal proceedings."
