Worthing man's 300 mile Christmas charity cycle ride
A WORTHING cyclist may have gone Christmas crackers with his plans for a 300-mile, 24-hour charity bike ride on Christmas Day.
Gordon Brooks, 20, from Southwold Close, High Salvington, will also be dressed as Santa Claus for the ride and hopes to raise more than 1,500 for the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.
"I just thought of it off the top of my head. It's a long time, isn't it?" reflected Gordon, who raised more than 1,300 for the hospice when he cycled from Edinburgh to Worthing in May.
Starting at midnight Christmas Eve, Gordon will do a series of 50-mile loops around Sussex on his single-speed mountain bike, passing his house on every circuit to pick up drinks from friends and answer the call of nature.
One gear
The self-appointed "one gear, no brain" cyclist said his family "aren't too bothered" by him spending Christmas Day on the highways of Sussex, adding: "I would rather do something like that than just sit around all day."
The marathon effort has attracted the attention of drinks company Extreme Drinks, who have pledged to provide him with energy refreshment throughout the day.
Janet Parsons, spokeswoman for Chestnut Tree House, said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Gordon for doing this extraordinary fundraising feat on Christmas Day.
"He is so enthusiastic and a wonderful supporter. We wish him all the best from everyone at Chestnut Tree House."
