He might be 73 years old, but Roger Thomas has been told his bodybuilding career has the potential to go much further.
The pensioner has just come third in the senior category (over 65s) at the British Natural Bodybuilding Championship in Manchester, and has been told next year he could win it.
Roger, of Highgrove Gardens, Worthing, said: “I met a chap who is just over 40, who does a lot of bodybuilding all over the world and has been in the world championships.
“He said that I have great potential, and could go much further. He thinks I could get first place, so he’s put me on a training schedule.”
To get through to the national event, Roger had to qualify at the South Championships held in Bognor Regis in June.
Roger trains at Worthing Leisure Centre five times a week, as well as doing kung fu training twice a week. He does weights and cardio, and also stays in shape thanks to his wife cooking him “all the right foods”.
He added: “I’m keen to do it, and will definitely keep going. I’ll probably think about slowing down when I’m 80 – maybe I’ll just go to the gym three times a week then!”
As well as the Manchester title, Roger also has his sights set on the Greater Gulf States Bodybuilding Championships title next year. He won the competition for the over 70s back in 2010, and would like to clinch first place again.
