Worthing’s planning department has avoided being placed into ‘special measures’ for its slow performance in dealing with major planning applications.
There was concern that the department would be designated after the Department for Communities and Local Government found that it was just one of three councils in the country that determined fewer than 30 per cent of major planning applications within 13 weeks in the two-year period between July 2011 and July 2013.
Bryan Turner, Worthing Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “I am delighted that the Government has recognised the efforts of Worthing Borough Council to approve major projects in Worthing.
“I am still disappointed, however, that the Government does not recognise that Adur and Worthing Councils now have a Joint Planning Service. We have been at the forefront of transforming the delivery of services and have won awards for delivering cost effective services.”
