Worthing church prepares to sell own metal roof

A WORTHING church wants to remove nearly 500 square yards of its copper roof covering before thieves beat them to it.
Goring United Reformed Church, in Barrington Road, off Shaftesbury Avenue, is seeking borough council permission to replace the main building’s valuable copper roof with a green, PVC-coated metal alternative.
Thieves have already stripped lead flashing from the church’s other buildings, and a planning application design statement to the council says the replacement should be done “as “soon as possible” before thieves target the copper roof.
“In today’s climate, where church roofs are being stripped of valuable metals, we believe that this work should be carried out with the utmost urgency,” says the statement.
It adds that another main reason for replacing the copper roofing, installed when the church was built 50 years ago, was that it was difficult to tackle the source of rainwater leaks into the building.
A raised seam on the PVC-P membrane would give the roof a copper-like appearance, and a similar material had been used on the roof of the new St Barnabas House hospice, in Titnore Lane, Durrington.
The project, which will have to be approved by Worthing Council’s planning committee, is costing about £20,000. But it is expected that some of this expenditure would be met by selling off the old copper.
