Worthing hospital smokers given a ticking off

WORTHING Hospital staff have been told off after a woman complained about them smoking in uniform in Homefield Park.

Sylvia Langan contacted the Herald to say she was disgusted that nurses, doctors and chefs were sitting on the grass and on the kerb in the park while on cigarette breaks.

After contacting the hospital, the Herald was told staff had been reminded that doing so was a clear violation of uniform policy.

Unhygienic

Mrs Langan, of Colebrook Close, said: "It's unhygenic. I wouldn't even sit in some of those places, as they're very dirty.

"There's all this talk of viruses and germs, and how we should wash our hands, and then they are out there doing this in the park.

"When you are low or vulnerable, you can pick up these things quite quickly."

Uniform policy

Kathryn Upton, hospital spokeswoman, said: "Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust has a very clear uniform policy that states that staff should not be seen smoking in public places.

"We appreciate this matter being brought to our attention and will reinforce the message to staff that this is unacceptable."
