Worthing mum raises thousands for charity
A MOTHER from Findon Village has ensured her dead son's memory lives on by raising thousands for a charity he supported.
Carol Maidment, 64, of High Street, and her family were left devastated after the sudden death of her son, Steven, 35, died nearly six years ago.
Steven, an accomplished doctor and neuropathologist at King's College in London, worked tirelessly on research for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust to find out why more and more people are being diagnosed with the condition, so Carol set out to raise 10,000 for the charity.
She achieved her goal in March this year — but the fund-raising goes on.
Carol said: "I thought to myself I had to get something going or I was going to end up mad.
"I also wanted to turn something destructive into something constructive."
Next event
The next event on the fund-raising calendar is a Swing Night at Findon Manor at 7pm on Monday, July 6.
A live singer will perform swing and "rat pack" classics and there will be a hog roast and mini auction.
Tickets are 17.50 each, available from Carol at 3 High Street, at Findon Manor and from Tony at the village butcher's. 40s and 50s dress is optional.
Other events which have been staged include race nights and a curry night and auction each year.
She said: "I never thought I would reach my target — but now I have, the aim is to get to 15,000.
"This is my way of saying 'I am doing something for you, son'."
