A SUCCESSFUL sea swim saw children as young as 12 take part.

The annual Worthing Swimming Club sea swim was held on Saturday, August 20 – a month later than planned due to bad weather conditions in July.

The event, held between the Lido and the Beach Hotel, has been running for more than 40 years but it only returned to the sea 11 years ago.

Prior to that it was held at Worthing Aquarena, for a period when the quality of the sea water in the town was not good enough for sea swimming.

Chairman of Worthing Swimming Club, Peter McCallum, said: “It went brilliantly.

“This one was one of the best ever.

“The weather was perfect and the sea was nice and calm and it was warm.”

Due to the change of date, only 11 people were able to take part compared to 20 in previous years.

And for the first time, those aged over 12 were able to race, allowing Ben Goddard, 13, Jacob Nash, 13, and Nick Savill, 12, the chance to swim.

The women’s quarter-mile race was won by Karen Chan, 15, in 4mins 35sec, while Ziggy Tate, 20, won the men’s half-mile race in 8mins 15 sec.

Familiar face, John Matthews, 71, also took part, having swum in the race ever since he won it in 1967.
