Worthing youth council’s hopes for year ahead

WORTHING’S new youth mayor has highlighted the importance of the youth council, stating it is vital as teenagers are “the key to the future”.

Worthing High School pupil, 14-year-old Liam Mills, has been elected as this year’s youth mayor after three years representing the Gaisford ward on the youth council.

For the first time, a deputy youth mayor has also been appointed due to the increased workload and busy engagement diary.

St Andrew’s High School pupil, Cam Hughes, 15, said he was looking forward to his deputy youth mayor role and agreed with Liam there was a lot to be done.

Cam, of Ardsheal Close, Broadwater, said: “It was felt the role of the youth mayor was an ever-growing one with responsibilities so they thought having a deputy would take the weight off the person.”

Worthing Youth Council has between 25 and 30 councillors representing the majority of high schools in the area.

Both the youth mayor, and now the deputy youth mayor, will shadow Worthing’s mayor Ann Barlow, attending events and meeting with the council to voice youth concerns.

Liam, of Sackville Road, Broadwater, said: “I think it is important young people can have their say and we listen to them. We are the key to the future and it is important we get a say.”

He said he had high hopes for the year ahead and was confident Mrs Barlow, a mother of four teenage children, would listen to the youth council.

He said: “We have a good relationship with her and she is very supportive of Worthing Youth Council.

“When she was a youth she did a lot of campaigning for youth clubs in her area, so I think she really understands where we are coming from and what we want to achieve.”
