Masons give boost to Worthing Hospital cardiac bid

Worthing Hospital’s cardiac appeal has been given a cash boost by members of the Masons.

Members of the Sussex Masonic and Worthing Freemasons donated £1,080 to the cardiac appeal, which still needs to raise £500,000 .

The Masons raised the money through a raffle held at its New Year celebration and presented the cheque to Love Your Hospital charity community and events fund-raiser Tina Ellis last month.

The Masons were then given a tour of the hospital’s new cardiac catheterisation laboratory, which is being funded by the appeal.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust consultant cardiologist Dr Nick Pegge led the tour.

Tina Ellis said: “I’d like to say a big thank-you to the Masons for their generosity and their continuing support for the appeal.

“So many people have helped us so far but we still need to raise another £500,000 to finish the project.”

The Love Your Hospital appeal has so far raised nearly £500,000 towards the cost of Worthing’s second cath lab, which is enabling the trust to offer potentially life-saving heart treatments to more people more quickly.

That fund-raising, supplemented by £450,000 for equipment donated by the League of Friends of Worthing Hospitals, enabled the lab to open at the beginning of August.

But the campaign still needs to raise as much again to complete accompanying renovations needed to the adjacent Courtlands ward, which cares for cardiac patients and operates the hospital’s coronary care unit.

Cardiac catheterisation laboratories, or “cath labs”, offer non-invasive surgical procedures which allow patients to have life-saving heart operations without the need of general anaesthetics. The second lab will mean the hospital will be able to see an extra 200-400 patients a year.
