Model engineers’ open day is big hit with guests

In addition to the usual Sunday steam trains, there was a boating pool with a selection of radio- controlled electric and steam-driven boats.

There was also a display of static and working steam models all built by the society’s members.

Among the exhibits was a four-inch scale working steam traction engine built and exhibited by member Andrew Breeze and a five-inch gauge Crampton locomotive currently being constructed by member Jim Ledger.

A selection of other five-inch gauge steam and diesel electric trains provided rides for families.

Member Ian Aitken said: “It was a really good day, even though we did lose some guests who I think were at the beach because of the good weather.

“Attractions-wise, it was much bigger than our usual open days and we ran it for longer.

“Children and adults alike were really enjoying themselves.

“Members of the society are from all walks of life. Some are retired, having had long careers in engineering.

“The society also has members who once drove the full-size steam engines of yesteryear.”

The society runs steam trains for the public between April and October on the second and fourth Sunday.

Rides start at 2pm and end at 5pm.

A charity event will be held on September 14, in aid of St Barnabas House.
